Projects

In this section we present you with information on our flagship projects, but also explain some of the rationale for our focus on data driven solutions for Road Safety.

MAST Online

MAST Online is a web based data analysis tool to revolutionise information use in road safety. It not only provides stakeholders with national crash data for user-customised in-depth analysis, but  also offers unique insights into people involved in crashes with the help of Mosaic Public Sector, the market leading socio-demographic database from Experian.

Where did it come from?

MAST fulfilsprevious government proposals to “provide an online database combining accident and socio-demographic data … [which will] allow ready local analysis of collision statistics by social and geographical groupings”.

The concept is based on an award winning solution originally created by the Thames Valley Safer Roads Partnership. TVSRP gained Department for Transport funding under the Road Safety Partnership Grant Scheme to share the benefits with the whole road safety community. The initial development cycle ran from April 2008 until March 2010.

Why does socio-demographic insight matter?

Customer insight is regarded as an important mechanism for driving service improvement across the public sector. Successful and cost effective intervention delivery relies on understanding both the issues and the intended audience. MAST Online supplies road safety practitioners with easy access to relevant data, and so will help them to provide the best possible service.

Road Casualties Online

After seeing the success of MAST Online for giving users power to do their own analysis, the Department for Transport commisioned the same project team to develop a version of Road Casualties Great Britain on the same platform.  Using many of the same technologies www.roadcasualtiesonline.org.uk allows members of the public and other interested parties to perform their own analyses on the national road casualty data.

Road Casualties Online is in no way a  replacement for MAST as it does not offer the same flexibilty for analysing data, neither does it allow users to segment their data according to socio-demographic types, however it does offer greater flexibility to end users to grapple with the data for themselves.

Child Casualties 2010

Road Safety Analysis, has just published ground breaking analysis into child road casualty risk by the areas in which they live.

In a report titled “Child Casualties 2010; A study into resident risk of children on roads in Great Britain 2004-08”, the level of risk children are exposed to is compared across 408 local authority areas and shows that children living in some areas have almost a one in 200 chance of being injured each year.
